What is the purpose for the valuation?

Do you want to sell it? Or is it for your own records and/or insurance? If you just want to sell, we are licensed second hand dealers here at Chilton's. We buy gold, antique jewellery, diamonds, some gemstones and some silver, depending on the style and condition of the pieces. Please make an appointment to come and see us to see if we are interested in buying your items and bring any paperwork relating to the jewellery that you have with you. There is no charge for us to view an item to see if we are interested in purchasing it (whether we say yes or no). For insurance see below:

Valuations Insurance - Written:

Chilton's Antiques are fully qualified NCJV registered valuers and we offer a valuation service in the store. We value all new items made at Chilton's by request and will only do valuations for items made elsewhere that date pre-1980s. For any post-1980s newly made items, we recommend you find the nearest qualified registered valuer at the NCJV website

Chilton's valuer Liz Stevens is available for appointments in the shop four days a week from Wednesday to Saturday. Please phone the staff to make an appointment. Any items dropped into the store on a Monday & Tuesday will only be taken in with prior arrangement. Items will not be taken in by staff without prior knowledge. Our valuations come laminated with photo on the back.

There are three different types of valuation certificates:

  1. Probate (Estate division - including divorce)

  2. Insurance (replacement value)

  3. Re-Sale (approximate price an item is worth - based on current market prices)

Items that will be valued at under $1,000 do not generally require a separate valuation certificate/s. Receipts are usually deemed adequate by insurance companies.

We charge a fee per item for insurance valuations not a percentage. We also wont value single item goods with a value higher than $40,000.

We have a questions & answers page that may answer a number of questions regarding types of metals and stones. To make an appointment please call us on PH: (02) 9524 0360, during business hours.

* No charge if it was bought from us or made by us.

* Single items $95 INC GST per certificate

* Multiple items $65 INC GST per certificate

Please bring in any relevant paperwork or past valuations or receipts with you. We ask that do you this, as, if there is a discrepancy, we can explain it to you at the time. You are obliged to inform us what the use of the valuation is for, as our valuations are not to be used for commercial purposes such as re sale. If there are any legal disputes pertaining to the goods we need to be informed at the time the appointment is made. As we run a retail shop, we don't have the time to attend court or any legal proceedings on your behalf, so we have the right to refuse to do the valuation. If this is the case we will suggest a different valuer to help you.

Verbal Valuations:

We offer a $25 service (for up to 5 items) for a verbal assessment, which does not include anything in writing. Please note: no large, single diamonds will be able to be assesed verbally as they need to be accurately graded and measured (see written valuations). This fee is waived by us if any of the goods are purchased by Chilton's Antiques.
